Local Loves: Abbeydale Food and Produce Market

I popped by the Abbeydale Food and Produce market on Saturday 28th about an hour before it ended with my son to check it out as it looked good from everything I saw about it online. Stupidly I had lunch prior to setting off so didn't have the space to sample any of the street food available. I also forgot to take pictures of the street food stalls which were set up outside so all the pictures are of market the inside of the Abbeydale Picture House.  It was my first visit to the picture house and I think it looks like a nice building with the potential to be gorgeous once it's properly restored. (Look at the size of it!).

We enjoyed wandering around looking at the food on offer, listening to live music, as well as consuming tea and cake. It was a hit with the toddler because of all the space for him to roam in and all the things to see and eat. (I got him a lovely bit of focaccia bread and he also sampled some cheese, beef burger and cakes.)  This market is now on my radar for future outings! You should add it to your radar too if you are in Sheffield or visiting when the next one is on.

Tea based exploration.

When I was out and about the other month I picked up a leaflet for a Yorkshire Tea Trail and as I'm partial to a nice cup of tea I put the leaflet in my bag for further inspection. 

On looking at the trail it became apparent there were a lot of places that I hadn't been for a cuppa but also that Sheffield and Huddersfield were completely overlooked.

I think it would be a fun challenge to take on this tea trail but I also think that it may be necessary to create my own tea trail for nice places to have a cuppa in Yorkshire and Derbyshire which haven't made the list. Anyone have any suggestions about where I should start?

Spring is Here! Blog Everyday in May.

 

So after what feels like a long wait spring is finally here! The sun has even decided to grace my little corner of Sheffield and set the blossom trees to blooming. 

 

On closer inspection of my environs it also appears that the flowers have been awoken to entice insects, spread pollen and grace the odd blog post....

After the long, treacherous winter we've just had I've decided to try and get out of the office whenever it's sunny.  Even if it's just for a bit on my lunch breaks to make the most of it.  If I hadn't I might not have noticed the crazy orange flowers on that plant or ventured into the shop near the Washington with the yams, baby aubergines and massive packs of spices!

Pay day tea June 2012.

I thought it was about time I brough back my pay day tea idea... so this month I decided to have payday tea at The Common Room, the bar above the Forum on Divison Street Sheffield.

This was a decision mainly based on fancying the look of the reasonably priced menu, for my tea I had a hotdog, chips, coleslaw and salad.

What a hotdog! I had to stand up to take that picture... my friend had chips then nachos.

Here's another picture of it! It nearly beat me but I managed it all some how. All that for £6.25, can't argue with that!

Bit of an Appetite

Last week I was luck enough to get myself a place at Appetite Sheffield's first event, an event dedicated to the food and food producers of this fair city.

Appetite is the brain child of two fellow food bloggers Clare and Ros who write Nibbly Pig & Feast and Glory , a creation formed by their love of food and Sheffield produce.

The actual Appetite event took place on the evening of 6th March at Butchers Works, which isn't a place I've visited before.  Popped by in the past... but never lingered for some food.  For those of you unfamilar with it, Butchers work is in an old mill building inbetween Arundel Gate and Brown Street.

I decided to go to the event alone as I was confident I would meet like minded people there and thought my boyfriend may appreciate the peace and quiet!

Entry to the event was £5.00 which, included a drink on arrival.  I went for a blonde ale as I am unsure about ales... normally I'm a larger drinker but when in Rome!

I found a seat next to two friendly girls and was then joined by another solo food enthusiast.

The night passed in a blur of conversation and good food samples.

The producers gave talks about their companies and methods of production.  Moss Valley even did a sausage making demonstration!

I enjoyed samples of: bread, sausages, bacon, pork pies, chutneys, tea, cake, pasties, sweet chilli chicken & prawns, poached egg & kale salad, coffee and ice cream!

Not bad for a fiver! There was also a food based quiz and produce to buy at the end... first time I've come back from a night out clutching sausages!
